In the Costa Brava and Girona Pyrenees there are extensive safe cycling routes and roads that will have you savouring every stretch of territory that makes you feel an exciting rush when sitting on the saddle and start paddling, whether you are on a road, mountain or gravel bike. This unique region has earned the title of “Made for Cycling”.

Below is a summary of key biking paths in Costa Brava, outlined and sorted by their level of challenge.

The Pirinexus Route - a path for cycling and hiking

Level of challenge: Moderate to difficult

The Pirinexus is a cycling track that goes through Spain and France, spanning about 360 kilometers in total. It surrounds the eastern Pyrenees, offering a combination of coastal landscapes and hilly areas. It also connects with EuroVelo8.

The itinerary goes through various important cities and natural regions, such as the volcanic area of La Garrotxa and the stunning beaches of Costa Brava. The route includes a combination of different surfaces, with some parts being unpaved, making it ideal for cyclists looking for a more adventurous ride.

The Girona Greenways, also known as Vías Verdes

Level of challenge: Simple to Middling

The Girona Greenways consist of a system of bike paths created from abandoned train tracks.

There are 11 routes available being the Vall de Bianya greenway the shortest (3.1 km).

One of the well-known greenways in Costa Brava is the "Ruta del Carrilet," linking Olot to Girona and then to Sant Feliu de Guíxols on the coast. This path spans between 55.5-58.5 km and provides a mostly level and seamless journey, perfect for casual cyclists and families. The landscape varies from the volcanic landscape near Olot, passing through the historic city of Girona, to the Mediterranean coast.

Cycle routes in Baix Empordà

Level of challenge: From simple to moderately difficult

This network consists of several looped routes that cover the Baix Empordà region , famous for its historic towns, rice fields, and extensive coastlines. Different routes have varying lengths and levels of difficulty, yet the majority are appropriate for novice and intermediate cyclists. The landscape consists mainly of flat areas, with occasional slight inclines, which is ideal for leisurely excursions.

You can follow the Tren Petit route , an old train route connecting Palamós and Palafrugell, allowing you to discover the agricultural landscapes around the Gavarres massif. The second not-so-challenging route, ideal for handbike beginners is this one, along the last stretch of the river. The route starts in Torroella de Montgrí and arrives at the mouth of the river, at Fonollera beach, opposite the Medes Islands. In both cases, the route can be done by bicycle, handbike, electric handbike or tandem.

From Cadaqués to Cap de Creus

Level of challenge: not too hard

Starting in the beautiful town of Cadaqués, this path leads cyclists to the lighthouse at Cap de Creus, the Natural Park and the easternmost point of mainland Spain.

Cycling this route takes 27 kilometers round-trip on paved roads, featuring some steep climbs (can your lungs hold it?)

The reward is spectacular views of the rugged coastline and the Mediterranean Sea. It's more challenging because of the hills but with the scenic landscape you can almost forget your leg pains.

Road to Rupit

Level of challenge: Hard

Beginning from Vic and extending to Rupit, this route spans approximately 80 kilometers one-way through the heart of Catalonia. The journey involves considerable elevation gain, with steep ascents and descents. Rupit is a charming stone village that seems frozen in time, and the route to it offers a mix of forested landscapes and rural settings. This route is recommended for more experienced cyclists seeking a challenge.
