The gap between the price shown in search results and the amount that actually charges your card is one of the most commonly reported issues with online travel platforms (OTAs - Online Travel Agencies).
In practice, it usually comes down to one or more of three recurring mechanisms that raise the final price after the booking process has already begun.
Three common sources of added cost
Booking fees.
Typically added at the second-to-last or last step of the process, rarely visible while comparing offers. The amount varies by platform and booking type.
Card payment surcharges.
Some platforms add a percentage on top of the transaction value for card payments, disclosed only in the terms and conditions or in fine print on the payment form.
Currency conversion markup.
If the booking currency differs from the card's currency, the exchange rate applied is often less favorable than the interbank rate, the difference goes to the platform rather than the bank.
None of these mechanisms is inherently improper. The issue lies in the timing and manner of disclosure, the later it appears in the booking process, the less likely a customer is to back out after noticing the higher price.
How to check a platform's pricing transparency
Verifying this doesn't require reading the terms and conditions. It's enough to compare two numbers: the price shown at the search stage and the amount on the payment confirmation screen. A discrepancy of more than a few percent usually points to one of the mechanisms described above.
For bookings involving several legs of a trip, a route through multiple cities, for example - the effect of these fees compounds, since each segment booked separately generates its own booking fee and its own currency markup.
We covered this, along with a comparison of specific platforms on pricing transparency, in our review of the best online travel agencies for 2026.
A standard worth expecting
A growing number of platforms now display the final price at the search stage itself, without surcharges revealed later in the process.
This is partly the result of EU regulations on price transparency in the travel sector, and partly a reflection of travelers increasingly comparing not just the starting price, but how it's presented.
