The Best Hikes Near Lisbon: Trails, Views & Coastal Magic

Lisbon is one of those cities where you can happily spend days just wandering around.

You’ve got the yellow trams, tiny cafés, beautiful viewpoints, old streets, and way too many good places to eat. But here’s the thing I love most about Lisbon: you don’t have to go far to get out into nature.

Give it 30 minutes to an hour and suddenly you’re walking through a forest, standing on top of a mountain, or looking down at the Atlantic from a cliff.

And honestly, some of the best views around Lisbon aren’t from a rooftop bar. They’re from a hiking trail.

So if you’re in Lisbon and feel like swapping the city streets for fresh air for a day, here are some of the best hikes near Lisbon that are actually worth making the trip for.

1. Sintra Mountains – The One That Feels Like a Fairytale

Distance from Lisbon: 40 minutes by train or car
Trail Type:Forests, viewpoints, castles and a little bit of everything
Difficulty: Moderate

The whole place feels slightly unreal. You’re walking through thick green forests one minute, and then suddenly there’s an old palace or castle appearing between the trees.
The Sintra-Cascais Natural Park has plenty of trails, so you can easily spend most of a day exploring the area on foot.

A few trails worth looking at:

  • Pena Palace to the Moorish Castle – Great if you want to combine hiking with Sintra’s famous landmarks.
  • Cruz Alta – Shorter, but expect some climbing. The views make up for it.
  • Monserrate to Convento dos Capuchos – A quieter option if you want to get away from the busiest parts of Sintra.

And when you’re done, do yourself a favor and grab a travesseiro in Sintra village. It’s basically the perfect post-hike reward.

My tip: Get there early. Sintra gets busy, and the trails are much nicer before the crowds arrive.

2. Cabo da Roca to Praia da Ursa – For That “Edge of the World” Feeling

From Lisbon: Around 1 hour
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
Best for: Ocean views, photography and adventurous hikers

This is one of those walks where you’ll probably stop every five minutes to take another photo.

Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland continental Europe, and the coastline around it is seriously dramatic.

Best for: Anyone who wants a hike that feels like a real adventure rather than just a walk. ‏‏‎ ‎

3. Azenhas do Mar Coastal Trail - Clifftop Views & Ocean Breezes

Distance from Lisbon: 50 minutes by car
Trail Type: Ocean views, villages and a relaxed day
Difficulty: Easy to moderate

The coastline around Azenhas do Mar is perfect if you want something slower. The little white houses sitting above the Atlantic are probably going to make you stop for photos more than once. What You’ll See:

You can walk between coastal villages and beaches, enjoying the cliffs and ocean along the way.

There are also plenty of places to stop for lunch, which is always a bonus.

If you’re into seafood, this is definitely the kind of place where you want to sit somewhere overlooking the water and order grilled fish.

The vibe: Slow, sunny, salty and very Portuguese.

4. Serra de Montejunto - The “Balcony of Estremadura”

From Lisbon: Around 1 hour by car
Difficulty: Moderate
Best for: Panoramic views, countryside and escaping the crowds

If Sintra feels a little too busy for you, try heading in the opposite direction.

Serra de Montejunto is much quieter and gives you a completely different side of the Lisbon region.

Instead of palaces and tourists, you get countryside, limestone landscapes, old windmills and wide-open views.

On a clear day, the views from higher up are beautiful, and you can see far across the surrounding landscape.

There are several walking routes around the mountain, so it’s a nice option if you want to spend a few hours outdoors without constantly running into crowds.

Bring water, especially in warmer weather. Some sections can be quite exposed.

Bonus: Stop in nearby Alenquer for a wine tasting at a local vineyard - because hiking deserves a toast!

5. Tapada Nacional de Mafra – Forests, Deer and a Peaceful Day Out

From Lisbon: Around 45 minutes
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Best for: Families, wildlife and an easy day outdoors

This one is a little different.

Just outside the town of Mafra, Tapada Nacional de Mafra is a sprawling natural park created by King João V in the 18th century for royal hunting. Today, it’s a peaceful haven filled with oak forests, streams, and roaming deer and wild boar.

What to Expect:

  • 4 color-coded hiking routes (from 4 km to 9 km)
  • Wildlife spotting (especially early morning!)
  • Family-friendly and perfect for a picnic

Fun fact: It’s right next to the Mafra National Palace, one of Portugal’s grandest buildings - great for a two-in-one day trip.

6. Serra da Arrábida - Secret Coves & Emerald Hills

Distance from Lisbon: 1 hour by car
Trail Type: Coastal + mountain
Difficulty: Moderate

The Arrábida Natural Park, near Setúbal, is one of the most stunning hiking regions in all of Portugal. Think crystal-clear waters, Mediterranean vegetation, and secluded beaches hidden beneath green cliffs.

Must-Do Trails:

  • Portinho da Arrábida Trail (8 km): Winds through forested hills to turquoise coves.
  • Convento da Arrábida Trail (5 km): Passes an old monastery with killer ocean views.
  • Praia do Creiro Loop (7 km): Combines mountain and beach - the best of both worlds!

Cool down: Jump into the water at Praia dos Coelhos or Praia da Figueirinha after your hike.

Local eats: End the day in Setúbal with a plate of choco frito (fried cuttlefish) - a local favorite.

7. Monsanto Forest Park - Nature in the City

Distance from Lisbon: 15 minutes by bus or car
Trail Type: Urban forest
Difficulty: Easy

No time to leave the city? No problem! Lisbon’s Monsanto Forest Park is one of Europe’s largest urban green spaces - a forest so big, it’s nicknamed the lungs of Lisbon.

Trail Highlights:

  • Shady forest paths and picnic areas
  • Panoramic viewpoints over Lisbon and the Tagus River
  • The Panorâmico de Monsanto, an abandoned viewpoint turned urban art gallery with 360° views.

Local tip: Bring a picnic or grab a coffee from the park cafés - it’s a perfect Sunday escape without leaving town.
