Separate Tickets & Self-Transfer: What If Your Flight Is Delayed?

Separate Tickets & Self-Transfer: What If Your Flight Is Delayed?

If you've read our post on how Tryp.com works, you already know that our AI system combines flights, trains and buses from different carriers, including ones that don't normally work together. That's how we find routes and prices a regular search engine won't show you. This has one consequence we'd rather be upfront about: part of your trip may be made up of separate tickets. So let's look at what that means in practice.

What are separate tickets?

There are two types of connections:

  1. A connection on a single ticket. You buy both flights in one booking from one carrier (or its partners). If your first flight is delayed and you miss the second one, the airline is obliged to rebook you on the next available flight.
  2. A connection on separate tickets (a self-transfer, known in the industry as "virtual interlining"). Each leg is a separate contract with a different carrier. Airline A doesn't know about your flight with Airline B and isn't responsible for whether you make it.
  3. Why do we sell separate tickets at all?
  4. Because they're often much cheaper and let us build routes that no single carrier offers, such as Lisbon → Rome → Athens on one trip.

The flip side: on these connections, it's your responsibility to make it to the next leg. That's why it's worth knowing where the risks are.

When is there a risk?

Simply put, there's a risk when a delay on one leg means you miss the next one. This most often happens when:

  • your connection time is short. With separate tickets, you usually have to leave the arrivals area, go through security again and get to a new gate. This is something we pay close attention to: when building your route, our system factors in realistic transfer times, so the risk on Tryp.com connections is low. And if your schedule changes, we’ll send you a notification straight away, so you’re never the last to know;
  • you have checked baggage. Whether it’s transferred automatically depends on the airport and the airlines involved. Some airports offer baggage transfer services for self-transfer passengers, but in many cases you’ll need to collect your bags and check them in again. It’s worth checking this before you fly, so you know what to expect;
  • you're changing airports or terminals. For example, landing at London Stansted and departing from Gatwick;
  • you're connecting from a flight to a train or bus. A delayed flight often means a lost train ticket;
  • you're travelling in peak season or late in the evening. Delays add up, and the last flight of the day has no backup option;
  • your connection involves border control. The passport queue alone can take an hour.

Why Tryp.com keeps the risk low:

Separate tickets don’t mean you’re on your own! Here’s what we do to make sure your connections run smoothly:

  • Smart route planning. Our AI supported search doesn’t just look for the cheapest combination. It takes transfer times, airports and terminals into account, so the connections we offer are realistic.
  • Real-time notifications. If anything changes in your schedule, we’ll let you know right away, giving you more time to react.
  • Free automatic check-in. Add your passport or ID details, and we’ll check you in and send your boarding passes before you fly. That’s one less queue during your connection.
  • Support that’s on your side, 24/7. If something goes wrong, our team helps you find an alternative connection, in many languages and at any time of day.
  • Protection options for every trip. From Flight Disruption payouts to Tryp.com Flex, you can choose the level of peace of mind that suits you.

How to reduce the risk before you travel

A few simple rules we follow ourselves. Many of them are already built into how Tryp.com suggests routes: our recommendations take into account connection times, the number of changes and the overall travel time, so the options you see are ones we’d book ourselves. Here’s what you can do on top of that:

  1. Leave yourself a buffer. For flights within Europe without checked baggage, plan at least 2–3 hours, and more if you have checked bags or are changing airports.
  2. Pack less if you can. A small personal item is always included with us. Without checked baggage, connections go much faster.
  3. Add your passport or ID details in Manage booking. We'll then c heck you in automatically and free of charge for the flight, and email you your boarding passes around 24 hours before departure. That way, you won't have to queue for check-in during your connection.
  4. Check where you're departing from: the airport, the terminal and how to get between them.
  5. Break up your journey with an overnight stay. On a multi-city trip, this is often the best option: you get an extra day of sightseeing instead of stress at the airport.

Choose the protection that suits your trip. When booking, you can add:

  • Flight Disruption: a fixed payout (e.g. €200 for each flight that is cancelled or delayed by 2 hours or more). You don't need to provide any proof, and if there's a disruption, we or our partner will contact you;
  • Comprehensive: full travel insurance, with coverage set out in the policy terms;
  • Tryp.com Flex: get 80% of your trip cost back if you cancel for any reason up to 2 days before departure. It starts from €5 per person.Your flight is delayed. What should you do?

Don't panic. Tryp.com is here every step of the way.

  • Take a photo of the departures board or a screenshot of the airline's delay notice. Keep your boarding pass.
  • Let us know right away. The sooner we know, the more options we have. Our team will help you find an alternative connection. Here's how to reach us:
    • the "Support" button in the top right corner of every Tryp.com page,
    • chat: available 24/7 in many languages,
    • phone and WhatsApp: +45 43 32 63 67 (English line open 9:00-23:00 CET).
  • Keep your receipts for food, transport and accommodation. You may need them for a claim against the carrier or your insurer.
  • Check your rights against the delayed airline. Flights departing from the EU, and flights to the EU operated by EU carriers, are covered by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. During a longer wait, you're entitled to care (meals, refreshments and, if necessary, accommodation). If you reach the destination of that flight more than 3 hours late, you may be entitled to compensation of €250–600 (unless the delay was caused by "extraordinary circumstances", such as bad weather). We'll guide you through the process of claiming compensation from the carrier.
  • If you have Flight Disruption, you don't need to do anything. If there's a qualifying disruption, we'll contact you ourselves.

Important: with separate tickets, the delayed airline isn't responsible for the onward flight you missed. EU261 compensation applies only to that airline's own flight, and as a rule, you cover the cost of a new ticket for the next leg yourself, unless you have the right insurance. That's why a time buffer and the right protection really make a difference.

Why it’s worth it?

Separate tickets are what make the most exciting trips possible: three cities for the price of one regular holiday, a flight combined with a scenic train ride, or a destination no airline flies to directly. That’s the kind of travel we built Tryp.com for.

And we don’t just sell you the tickets and disappear. We plan realistic connections, keep you updated along the way, and our support team is there 24/7 if plans change. We love travelling ourselves, and what matters most to us is simple: that you get to your destination relaxed, on time and with great memories from every stop along the way.
